For those of you who don’t know, we are in Tampa, along the Gulf Coast or western part of Florida. We just came through two back-to-back hurricanes in less than 2 weeks. Helene came and then Milton. Each brought flooding and wind damage. You prepare, put things away and try to protect, you live through, you clean up and put everything back. Repair damage, help your neighbor and realize very quickly what is important in life. If it was all to be gone tomorrow, are you alright with that? It is an exercise Floridian goes through to enjoy sunshine, cool Gulf breezes and a laid back lifestyle. It is also full embodiment of the Japanese concept - Mono no aware, understanding the transient and fleeting nature of life.
We were luckier than most and are grateful for that, we also realize many others have suffered tremendous loss. If you would like to help, donate time, money or resources to those who have lost their homes and livelihood see an extensive list of resources Nationally and locally. Do what you can and remember, we are all in this together. Let’s get along, have grace and be kinder to one another, including the planet.
Remember that hurricane fatigue is real, PSTD (post-stress traumatic disorder) is real as a result of natural disaster. Grief can be dark and we often do not talk of such things in our culture. We must acknowledge the darkness and talk about things so we may process them. We need to share experiences, move towards the sunshine and help lift one another up.
Gratefully yours,
Tona
P.S. the feature image is from the end of my street where I live which is a few minutes from the studio. This will give you an idea of what happened in Tampa and lots of Florida.
