Letter Writing & Snail Mail

Letter Writing & Snail Mail

In a world of instant messages and disappearing stories, a handwritten letter is a radical act of presence. It says: you are worth my time, my ink, and my best stationery.

At The Paper Seahorse, letter writing isn't a hobby, it's a practice, a way of being that helps us thrive in a world of digital distraction. One that connects us to history, to each other, and to the slower, richer version of ourselves we're always trying to find.

Why Write Letters?

  • A handwritten letter is permanent. It is a physical gift from the sender. Their hand put down ink on the paper.   It can be kept, reread, and treasured for decades
  • Writing by hand engages your brain differently than typing and produces many benefits for brain health, and overall well-being.  To learn more check out our comprehensive Clinical Compendium
  • Receiving a letter in the mail is one of life's genuinely underrated joys
  • It's a mindfulness practice disguised as correspondence

Getting Started: What You Need

  • Paper:  100–120 gsm, laid or vellum texture. See our Paper Guide for help choosing.
  • Envelopes:  matching or complementary. Lined envelopes add a luxurious touch.
  • A good pen or pencil: fountain pen, quality ballpoint, dip pen or graphite pencil like Blackwing. The writing instrument matters.
  • Stamps:  forever stamps work, but decorative postage makes it special.
  • Optional extras: wax seals, stickers, pressed flowers, ephemera

What to Write About

The blank page is the hardest part. Here are prompts to get you started:

  • A memory you share with the recipient
  • Something you've been meaning to say but never found the right moment
  • What you've been reading, watching, or thinking about lately
  • A question you genuinely want them to answer
  • Simply: what today looked like, in detail
